Service Description

This class is held at our Potrero Hill Studio Tuesday @ 6pm January 28th - March 4th Join us for an exciting 6-week ceramics course designed to teach you the essentials of hand building while creating functional and fun board games! This step-by-step class will guide you through creating boards, custom pieces, painting and glazing techniques for your favorite board game from checkers and chess to candy land and mancala. Whether you're new to ceramics or looking to expand your skills, this class offers a fun and rewarding hands-on experience that you can bring to your next game night. WEEK ONE: Project Brainstorming -Potential board games include… -Chess -Backgammon -Mancala -Checkers / Chinese Checkers -Dominoes -Mahjong -Go -Tic Tac Toe -Candyland -Chutes and Ladders -An original game! WEEK TWO: Board creation -Slabs and tiles for boards–slow drying is paramount! Be careful not to dry anything on warped boards; I will collect a series of nice flat hardibacker boards to use for the class. -Making a template can be helpful if you need to make repetitive shapes (like tiles for chess and checkers). You can do this by either hand-drawing and cutting out shapes or bringing printed templates. WEEK THREE: Piece creation -Think about the formation of your pieces. Do they need to assume a variety of shapes, like in chess? Do they need to be distinct and identifiable in their color or shape? Do you want to follow traditional styles or put your own twist on a classic game? Week FOUR: Finishing touches -Consider underglazing the bottoms of your pieces to give them a pop of color, or perhaps even underglazing your entire collection of pieces! If you plan on glazing your board glossy or matte, then underglazing the pieces could create a nice tactile distinction between board and piece. Week FIVE: Glazing -If your board is textured, using a stain would emphasize the texture without compromising it. -We will go over both hand-glazing and dipping–depending on your piece, you may want to glaze it by hand to achieve more precise detail. WEEK SIX: Playtime! -Final class potluck and game night! We will enjoy our finished games over snacks and drinks.
